Ian and his wife Margaret have been married for 47 years; they have three sons aged 44, 42 and 40 and five grandchildren. They have also been foster parents in Dunedin and Nelson.

Ian was elected to Council in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016.

His broad range of knowledge of local government arises from his council service including:

He has also been a local television daily news show presenter, camera operator and producer and was a weekly Radio Fresh FM local interest program producer and presenter.

Prior to his election, Ian was the City Secretary and subsequently the Council's Director of Corporate Services.

Maintains a sustainable lifestyle, regularly cycles 10km per day,  being self-sufficient in olive oil and enjoying a prolific edible garden with 30 fruit trees.
