Hill Country Erosion Funding approved
Nelson City Council has funding of $187,200 from the Ministry for Primary Industries Hill Country Erosion Fund, approved. The funding will be used to work with landowners on land management for lifestyle blocks and farms in the Wakapuaka area.
The funding will be used to build capacity within the Council and to support work in rural areas to reduce erosion across steep and erosion-prone land. Council will work in partnership with New Zealand Landcare Trust to deliver the desired outcomes.
In particular, the funding will be used towards a better understanding of the issues facing small block owners. This understanding will help towards developing resources that can be used in other regions.
Cllr Brian McGurk, Co-Chair of the Planning and Regulatory Committee, says that the successful fund application is just the beginning of a longer-term approach to environmental resilience.
“This is a great start and recognises that the council together with the community are serious about addressing the degradation of our environment. This funding will help in discharging our responsibilities as ecological stewards, assist in building community resilience and responding to climate change, all of which are absolutely essential for a healthy environment."
