It’s that time of year again, with the countdown to Christmas well underway. The decorations are going up and event planning is well down the track.
Nelson’s Christmas Celebration
Following the success of last year’s new look Christmas Celebration for our senior residents, the doors are set to open for this year’s festive event on Thursday 20 December.

Decorating the city
This season, Council will be reusing what we can from the investment we made last Christmas as well as introducing some new festive elements. The summer banners and tree wraps will be back to adorn many of the inner city streets and a new Christmas tree will light up 1903 Square in upper Trafalgar Street. The tree will feature a lighting display from the Light Nelson team.
Another Light Nelson installation will be on the Church Steps and the Cathedral bell tower will be illuminated. The clock tower at Civic House will also be running a lighting display and the “Catch a Star” installation by Lee Woodman (below) is on display again in the Cathedral.
There are plans for a large nativity scene to assemble at the Cathedral with some of the characters appearing around the city as they make their way there in the lead up to Christmas.
Uniquely Nelson is also working closely with central city businesses on initiatives. These include carol singing performances in the two weeks prior to Christmas, Christmas trees outside shops and lighting displays projecting on to the footpath outside shops on Bridge Street.
Council has partnered with the team from Light Nelson and Community Art Works to make the best use of the resources we already have.
Our aim is to achieve a festive and vibrant feel for the city.
Merry Christmas and the very best wishes for 2019.
