Nile Street East Stormwater Upgrade
|Project Manager:||Nelson City Council|
|Status:||Construction nearing completion|
|Duration:||Completion in the 2018/19 FY|
Progress update December
The final connection of the new 1600dia pipe has been made, completing the installation of the new pipework. Work will not quite be fully complete on-site before Christmas. The final reinstatement of the road and some other minor works will need to be completed in January. The road will have a temporary seal over the Christmas/New Year period to ensure the road is clear for road users.
Progress update October
The new pipe has been installed in Clouston Terrace and is approaching Nile Street. Works to construct the outlet structure took longer than expected due to wet weather which increased the flows in the Maitai River, so the project is now expected to be finished in November.
What we are doing
Upgrading the current stormwater network which drains Atmore Bowl/Cleveland Terrace with a new 1600mm diameter concrete stormwater pipe. The new pipe has been designed to accommodate a 1 in 50-year flood. For efficiency reasons, Council will be undertaking minor safety improvements at Clouston Terrace/Nile Street East intersection along with making minor improvements to the current water supply network.
Construction will take place from Clouston Terrace progressing toward Cleveland Terrace. Nile Street East will be reduced to one lane of traffic for a time as pipes are laid in the eastbound lane.
Why we are doing it
Following the 2011 storm event, numerous properties around Nile Street East/Clouston Terrace were flooded. To improve levels of service, Council is upgrading and, in some places, duplicating the current 1050mm diameter stormwater pipes to increase capacity.
