November update for Nelson RWC 2011

Group steers way for community involvement in RWC 2011

An eight-member steering group has been appointed by Nelson City Council to engage community and business involvement in Rugby World Cup 2011. The Nelson RWC 2011 Steering Group members are:

  • Aldo Miccio, Nelson City Councillor and Steering Group Chair
  • Ali Boswijk, Nelson City Councillor
  • Sara Chapman, Chairman of Tasman Bays Heritage Trust and former strategic planner for Saatchi & Saatchi
  • Shane Drummond, representing Tasman Rugby Union
  • Tim King, Tasman District Councillor
  • Bronwyn Monopoli, chartered accountant
  • Pete Rainey, Nelson City Councillor
  • Barney Thomas, Tangata Whenua  Whakat

The Steering Group’s role is to involve as many residents, businesses and visitors as possible in the celebration of RWC 2011 in Nelson. While Council staff are dedicated to delivering the fundamentals of two matches, team hosting (TBC), Fan Zones and the festival of Rugby, the Steering Group will lead and coordinate business and community involvement that will help make RWC 2011 in Nelson the premier event of the decade.

Share an idea or ask a question

Council is taking many enquiries on a variety of topics having to do with Rugby World Cup 2011.  If you have a need to speak to a Council staff member involved with RWC 2011 or a member of the Steering Group, the fastest way to get your request to the right staff member is through the new Council enquiries system at www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz/rwc-enquiries.

Will Nelson host a RWC team?

Tournament Organiser Rugby New Zealand is making team hosting announcements mid December, so Nelson should know if one or more of the RWC teams will be staying with us during Tournament time.

Preparations moving along

Nelson is gearing up in so many ways to host RWC 2011. Here are just a few of the key projects underway or recently completed that will be ready at kickoff.

  • The new Saxton Field multisport complex was officially opened in October and it will be a key training venue for any visiting RWC 2011 team.
  • A variety of projects under the Heart of Nelson Strategy aim to create a vibrant, liveable, attractive Nelson city centre for residents and visitors.
  • Turf replacement at Trafalgar Park is underway and the new turf will be sown before the end of the year. The existing turf has been removed and the construction of the drainage and irrigation systems will start later this month.
