Council funding supports community work

Nelson City Council has allocated its contract funding and one-off grants from the Community Assistance Fund following two days of hearings and deliberations.

Recipients of the funding are not-for-profit organisations that provide services to the Nelson community across a wide range of sectors. A full list is included below.

As is always the case, there was high demand for the funding with the level applied for far exceeding the amount available. This year the Council received over 70 applications worth more than $370,000 for the available funds of approximately $150,000.

This year 29 contracts and 21 one-off grants were funded, totalling $144,792.98, which brings the total community assistance spend for the 2014/2015 year to $423,192.98. Some of this is made up of grants approved in previous years.

Community Services Committee Chair Pete Rainey says the application process was a great opportunity to engage with the community.

“We were extremely impressed with the standard of this year’s applications and had to make some very tough decisions around allocation.

“I’d like to thank all the groups for the effort they put into their applications and all those who took the time to come and speak to Council. Through the application process we’ve gained a strong insight into the fantastic work being done, by a large number of people, in all sectors of the community. The groups applying are primarily made up of volunteers, who are doing an incredible job and making a real difference in our community.”

“We’ve done our best to provide support that aims to strengthen these agencies as much as possible,” Councillor Rainey added.

Community Assistance funding is intended to support those organisations providing services in line with the Council’s objectives as developed through long term planning with the Nelson community. It is recognised that by developing partnerships and investing in not-for-profit groups, Council can help to attract additional funding into the community from Central Government and other funding agencies.
