Waste minimisation match fund trial

There is a high level of interest in finding ways to avoid or reduce waste in our community.

We’re trialling a new Waste Minimisation Match Fund scheme to support those members of our community who have a great idea and want to get started on creating change and minimising our waste footprint. Match funding means that we match Council funding to your resources such as volunteer time, donations, etc.

We are keen to see community-focused projects which enable our community to avoid or reduce waste, or close the loop on valuable resources being reused rather than wasted (circular economy).  Preference will be given to projects which have longer term benefits and reach a wider number of people. Applicants will also need to demonstrate appropriate skills and capacity to deliver the project.

Further information on criteria for projects to qualify for funding and examples of activities can be found in the Applicant Guidelines (223KB PDF).

If you’d like advice if your idea could qualify for funding, email rethinkwaste@ncc.govt.nz to discuss.

How much can I apply for?

During round one from open from 9 November to 7 December, $10,000 will be available for applicants to apply for up to $2,000 as a match to their contribution to their project (minimum grant size $500).  There will be additional rounds in early 2021 (a total of $30,000 is available for this trial grant programme).

Please note that waste minimisation at events is not included in this scheme – found out more about support available for event organisers.

Who can apply?
