Projects to be added to the Regional Land Transport Plan
At its meeting yesterday the Regional Transport Committee resolved to recommend to Council that the Nelson Regional Land Transport Plan (RLTP) 2015-21 is varied to include a total of $4.97M for “Noise Improvements” and $350,000 for “Safety Enhancements on the State Highway Network”.
The funding for these projects will be spread over the 2018-21 financial years.
The two projects were discussed in the Plan review process in June this year but at the time there wasn’t sufficient detail available for them to be included in the Plan.
The Noise Improvement Programme involves the application of the lower road noise surface and the Safety Enhancements will include the continuation of the central barrier along the Whakatu Bypass.
Regional Transport Committee Chair Councillor Mike Rutledge says "We welcome this investment into improving safety and environmental outcomes for Nelson. We have had many submissions from residents about the negative impacts of road noise on their living standards when we consulted on the RLTP so it is great we have been able to work with NZTA to take a major step towards addressing these concerns."
“This is a great start, and we will be working towards expanding on these programmes of work. The RTC has requested that NZTA works with urgency to progress our request to implement a consistent 80km/hr speed limit from the Haven Road roundabout to Todds Bush Road, as well as considering further surface improvements to reduce noise for residents along this corridor.”
The New Zealand Transport Agency will be requesting that Tasman District Council also include the “Safety Enhancements” project into its RLTP as a matter of urgency to allow the projects to proceed.
