Seeking artwork concepts for a key Nelson site
Nelson City Council in partnership with New Zealand Transport Agency wish to commission a new public artwork for a high-profile gateway site and now invite Expressions of Interest from artists who are New Zealand citizens or those who are permanent residents.
Gaile Noonan, Chair of the Nelson City Council Community Services Committee says, “This is an exciting opportunity to transform what is currently an uninteresting but highly visible site by creating a large-scale artwork that is both aesthetically pleasing, and which provides a creative point of difference to the city’s existing public artworks.”
The jointly funded work is to be installed along the north side of QEII Drive, specifically between Haven Road and Wildman Avenue, upon the existing wire fence and concrete wall which runs parallel for approximately 70 metres and then curves around into Wildman Street potentially adding a further 45 metres. It is not a requirement that concepts ‘conceal’ the existing structure, responses could possibly take the form of numerous smaller installations intermittently spaced along the site to create a congruous whole.
Council welcomes concepts from artists that can be realised within the jointly funded $25,000.00 budget available and who would ideally be able to create and install their design by the end of the year.
The closing date for submissions is 4pm on Monday 24 September 2018.
