Rethink Waste|Whakaarohia is all about working together to avoid the creation of waste, or find ways to better use resources. Between us all we have knowledge and skills to share and we can all do our bit to minimise our impact on Te Tai Ao.

International Compost Awareness Week 2022

Did you know Nelson City Council offers a $20 subsidy through approved retailers for compost bins, worm farms, bokashi buckets and worms? Whether you're a composting pro or just kick-starting your sustainability journey, if you redeem your $20 coupon in May you could win a personal in-home compost and horticulture consultation with Tim from @Tim's Garden!

What's an in-home consult? Tim will:

  • Answer all of your composting and gardening questions
  • Give you tips to avoid common composting mistakes
  • Figure out how to best use the compost in your unique garden space
  • Help you with general plant care and how to diagnose common diseases and plant problems
  • Send you a consultation report detailing all of your questions, suggestions and offering advice

Low waste parenting workshops

In partnership with Waste Free with Kate, Rethink Waste Whakaarohia is sponsoring a Low Waste Parenting as an online course with easy to use modules which can be taken any time.  There is a limit of 50 spaces for Nelson residents.  The course includes a gift bag of low waste parenting staples such as reusable nappies, worth $80, which is included in the registration cost of $21.30 for the whole programme. The course includes a live ‘ask me anything’ with Kate Meads on 7 April.

The course covers topics such as ‘products: feeding & baby food’ and ‘cloth nappies 101’

How to reduce waste at events workshops

(Please note these workshops were postponed due to the lockdown, and new dates will be published shortly)

These workshops are intended for both commercial and community event organisers, and take a step by step approach to introducing waste minimisation at your event.  Lots of practical advice is on hand, along with excellent and user-friendly resources such as packaging guidelines, planning tools and guides to set up wash stations and manage reusables.

  •  The next Waste Minimisation Workshop for event organisers will take place in autumn 2022. Dates to be confirmed.

How to Compost workshops

These popular one hour workshops are great for both for beginners and those wanting to troubleshoot their home compost set up. Tim’s Garden’s specialists provide fun and well-informed insights into how to get the most from your compost bin. The workshop includes examples of composting techniques, explains some common errors and provides a host of handy tips.

Rethink Waste composting and food waste hub at the Nelson Saturday Market

Rethink Waste will be part of a monthly information hub at the Saturday market on how to compost and get the most out of food waste, in partnership with Waste No More and Community Compost – both local champions in avoiding waste. Drop-in form information, tips and demonstrations on how to compost, learn about options for sharing unwanted food, and pick up tips on avoiding food waste with Love Food Hate Waste NZ. Whilst you’re there, fill in the Rethink Waste survey and go in the draw to win a $50 prezzie card.
