Approved Temporary Road Closures - The Spectacle Event 2026

The Spectacle 2026 event road closures were approved by the Council Regulatory Process Panel on 13 August 2026.

Nelson City Council has received a proposal from The Spectacle Limited to temporarily close the following roads to ordinary traffic for the date/s listed below.

Road Closure:

• Selwyn Place - between Trafalgar Square West and Trafalgar Square East

Date and time of scheduled closure: From 9:30 am Thursday 3 December to 12:00 pm Sunday 6 December 2026

Road Closures:

• Selwyn Place – between 31 Selwyn Place and Collingwood Street, including the Church Steps and the intersection with Sussex Street
• Hardy Street – between Montgomery Square Carpark and Collingwood Street
• Church Street – full length
• Hope Street – full length
• Park Street – full length

Date and time of scheduled closure: From 1:00 pm Saturday 5 December to 1:00 am Sunday 6 December 2026

Road Closures:

• Trafalgar Square West – between Selwyn Place and Nile Street West
• Trafalgar Square East – between Selwyn Place and Nile Street East

Date and time of scheduled closure: 2:30 pm Friday 4 December to 9:00 am Sunday 6 December 2026

Road Closure:

• Trafalgar Street – between Hardy Street and Halifax Street

Vehicles exiting Wakatu Square Carpark onto Trafalgar Street will be restricted to a left turn only, into a dedicated Northbound Lane.

• Friday 4 December 2026 - 7:30 am to 8:15 am
• Friday 4 December 2026 - 11:30 am to 12:15 pm
• Friday 4 December 2026 - 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm
• Saturday 5 December 2026 - 6:45 am 7:15 am
• Saturday 5 December 2026 - 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Lane Closure:

• Trafalgar Street/Halifax Street Intersection

Date and time of scheduled closures:

• Friday 4 December 2026 - 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm
• Saturday 5 December 2026 - 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Vehicles travelling Eastbound on Halifax Street – left turn only
Vehicles travelling Southbound on Trafalgar Street – right turn only

Lane Closure:

• Hardy Street – Westbound Lane closure between Domett Street and Collingwood Street – Saturday 5 December 2026 – 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm

This is for The Spectacle 2026 – Running and Walking Events and Concert

• The Event will be held from 12:00 am Friday 4 Dec to 11:00 pm Saturday 5 Dec 2026
• The roads will be closed, and vehicle access will be unavailable during this time, except in an emergency.
• The Route 1 eBus will be detoured for the duration of the closure – please see ebus.nz for further information.

This proposal is made in accordance with the Local Government Act 1974. Unauthorised use of vehicles on the road during the closure period is not permitted and may constitute an offence.
