State of Environment Report

Nelson City Council regularly reports on the condition of the local environment through its State of the Environment (SoE) reporting. These reports provide a snapshot of environmental health and long‑term trends across Nelson, helping Council and the community understand how the environment is changing and where action is needed.

State of the Environment reporting plays a key role in evidence‑based decision‑making, supporting planning, investment, and environmental programmes aimed at fostering a healthy, resilient, and sustainable community.

What the Report Covers

State of the Environment reporting draws on data and information from across Council’s monitoring and science programmes, including:

  • estuary and coastal health
  • air quality monitoring
  • soil condition and erosion
  • biodiversity indicators
  • the effects of land use and climate variability
