Have your say on freedom camping

Elected members approved consultation on a new Responsible Camping Bylaw at a Council meeting on Thursday, 3 April.

The proposed new bylaw, which replaces the Freedom Camping Bylaw 2017, would regulate freedom camping in Nelson City.

One of the key proposals will prohibit freedom camping at Kinzett Terrace, the Maitai Cricket ground and Isel Park. This would go alongside an increase in capacity for freedom camping in Nelson city centre.

Group Manager Community Services Andrew White says Council wants to take a balanced approach that acknowledges the needs of our community and Freedom Campers.

“Although freedom campers would no longer be able to stay at Kinzett Terrace, the Maitai Cricket Ground, and Isel Park, there is no net-loss of available freedom camping space.

“The proposed new bylaw prohibits freedom camping in less easy-to-manage sites and increases capacity at the central carparks. This enables Council to better protect the environment, the health and safety of the public and ensure the community has easy access to sites.”

Consultation opened on 7 April and will close on 7 May. There will be a hearing in May and a final decision expected in mid-2025.
