Councillor's Comment - Pete Rainey: ​Honoured to serve as Deputy Mayor

I’m deeply honoured to have been appointed Deputy Mayor of Nelson by Mayor Nick Smith. I’m grateful to Nick for the trust he’s shown in me, and for again demonstrating his willingness to reach across the political spectrum in the interests of good governance for our city.

My goal in this role is simple: No surprises, argue fairly, collaborate well, and get things done. Nelson is facing some big challenges – from housing and infrastructure to the cost of living and climate resilience – and the only way we’ll make progress is by working together.

I’ve been involved in this city for a long time, as a councillor, community advocate, and through my work in the arts and youth sectors. Whether it’s co-founding Smokefreerockquest, chairing the New Zealand Choral Federation, or helping deliver major community events, I’ve always believed in the power of collaboration and creativity to make Nelson stronger.

Serving again, as Deputy Mayor, gives me the chance to put that belief into practice – helping build a collegial, forward-looking council that’s focused on the wellbeing of our whole community.

I also want to acknowledge those who’ve held this role before me — Gail Collingwood, Rachel Reese, Ali Boswijk, Paul Matheson, Judene Edgar, and most recently Rohan O’Neill-Stevens. Each brought something unique to the job, and I hope to do them proud. Rohan, in particular, has been an inspiration – it’s not every day you find yourself learning so much from someone so young.

To my fellow councillors, both newly elected and returning, I’m looking forward to working with you constructively and respectfully. Collegiality has to be our goal if we want to achieve consensus and move the city forward.

And to the people of Nelson: Hold us to account, challenge us, and bring your ideas to the table. This city has always punched above its weight in creativity, community spirit, and innovation. If we combine that energy with sound financial management and genuine collaboration, we can build a future that works for everyone.
