Experts gather in Waikawa to protect our marine life

Marine scientists, researchers and environmental managers met in Waikawa, Picton last week for the annual Top of the South Marine Biosecurity Forum.

The event brought together experts from Biosecurity New Zealand, Earth Science NZ, Cawthron Institute and Boffa Miskell to share knowledge on how to protect the region’s unique marine environments.

Speakers discussed detecting and managing marine pests, the latest aquatic biosecurity research, and practical ways to prevent the spread of invasive species through vessel antifouling. Attendees also took part in a hands-on biosecurity incident response exercise, testing how agencies work together in real-world scenarios.

The forum highlighted the strength of collaboration between councils, iwi, science organisations and industry in caring for our coastal waters.
