Playspace Whakatū takes shape

A major milestone was reached last week at Rutherford Park, with concrete poured for the sweeping tentacle forms that will define Playspace Whakatū.

Inspired by the cultural narrative of Te Wheke a Muturangi, the design draws on the form and movement of the wheke (octopus) to create a play experience unlike anything else in the region. The result will be a landscape shaped by story — winding, reaching, and alive with imaginative possibilities along the banks of the Mahitahi river.

Playspace Whakatū is an iwi-led project, delivered in partnership with Nelson City Council as part of Kōpū. Design is led by Isthmus, with local firm Kūmānu delivering the build. For more information, visit kopu.nz/playspace-whakatu-information.
