A lifetime of service honoured

Brian Ramsay BEM (Mil) was the recipient of the first Nelsonian Civic Award at a Council meeting held earlier this month.

Brian, who was joined by wife Diane at the meeting, has dedicated more than four decades to voluntary service in the Nelson community.

This includes helping set up the Nelson Cadet Unit in 1987 and being an active RSA member who organised countless Poppy Day collections, Dawn Services and multiple other events for more than 15 years. Brian also spent many years volunteering for other organisations including Victim Support, Abbeyfield House, IHC and Broadgreen Historic House.

Brian was nominated by Councillor Mel Courtney, with each elected member having a turn at nominating a person whose contribution to our community deserves recognition.

Mel highlighted Brian’s huge contribution to Nelson in a speech addressed to a public gallery full of Brian’s family, friends and colleagues from organisations he’s served.

“For most of us, 'volunteering' might mean helping out for a weekend or lending a hand at a school fair - but for Brian, it has been a full-time hobby… one that’s lasted longer than many careers!

“Brian, through everything you’ve done, you’ve built connections, strengthened community spirit, and inspired others to step up.

“Nelson runs a little smoother, shines a little brighter, and feels a lot more like home because of people like you. On behalf of the Nelson City Council, and the people of Nelson - thank you for your four decades of generosity, compassion, and service.

“You’ve set an example that reminds us all that community really is everything - and with you in it, it’s been stronger than ever.”

Council has established these awards to honour people who have selflessly contributed to the city, with an emphasis on recognising those who have contributed voluntarily; made exceptional contributions through their length of service, leadership or impact; and who have enhanced the city and lives of others.
