Nelsonian Civic Award
The Nelsonian Civic Award is a Nelson City Council award to honour people who have selflessly contributed to the city to advance community wellbeing, culture, heritage, sport, education, environment, the arts, industry or commerce. The focus is on recognising people who have contributed voluntarily; made exceptional contributions through their length of service, leadership or impact; and who have enhanced the city and lives of others.
A Nelsonian Civic Award can be granted to a person (not group or organisation):
- of any age
- up to 12 months posthumously
- who lives anywhere so long as their contribution is to the City of Nelson

Nelson City Council’s Elected Members have been asked to each nominate one person for a Nelsonian Civic Award during the 2025-28 term. Elected Members will be provided with a list of suggestions from the public prior to nominating a potential recipient.
Someone from the Mayor and Councillors’ Office will contact you if the person you have suggested is selected to receive a Nelsonian Civic Award. Your suggestion will be held on file for the duration of the term or until the person you suggested has been selected.
A Nelsonian Civic Award will be presented approximately four times per year at a regular Council meeting.
