Climate Change Grant - 2025/2026

The council awarded grants to four projects under the Climate Change Grant 2025/2026:

1. A contribution towards a cargo bike to deliver and pick up materials

  • Applicant: The Green Collective
  • Amount Awarded: $999

2. Ekos to deliver Climate Risk Assessments for 10 small to medium businesses in Whakatū

  • Applicant: Ekos
  • Amount Awarded: $15,000

3. A contribution to install solar photovoltaic system at YKids Early Learning Centre

  • Applicant: YKids Early Learning Centre
  • Amount Awarded: $20,000

4. A contribution to purchase an electric van to deliver to support delivery of outdoor, active learning programmes across Whakatū

  • Applicant: Active Little Learners
  • Amount Awarded: $15,000

Climate Change Business Grant - 2024/2025

The council awarded grants to four projects under the Climate Change Business Grant 2024/2025.

Successful Climate Change Business Grant recipients, June 2025:

  1. Business Decarbonisation Programme
    • Applicant: Businesses for Climate Action/Mission Zero
    • Amount awarded: $14,619.44
  2. Nelson Arts Festival: Sustainable Transport Initiative
    • Applicant: Nelson Festivals Trust
    • Amount awarded: $1,410

Nelson City Council and the Chamber of Commerce presented an evening of Climate Change action and innovation at the Boathouse on 19 March 2025.

Businesses were encouraged to apply and pitch their emissions-reduction business ideas to a panel of three judges. Two businesses were successful in securing funding for their projects:

  1. The Bike Hub Nelson
    • Project: Purchase an electric van to transport donated bikes
    • Amount awarded: $20,000
  2. One Green Bean
    • Project: Build and install a mobile lithium battery system to power the One Green Bean coffee cart
    • Amount awarded: $5,000

Successful Climate Change Community Grant recipients, May 2025

  1. Empowering Conservation
    • Applicant: The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary Trust
    • Amount awarded: $16,580
  2. Nelson Rice
    • Applicant: Multicultural Nelson Tasman
    • Amount awarded: $6,486
  3. Cycling to Kai
    • Applicant: Nelson Environment Centre
    • Amount awarded: $11,829.99

With a total funding pool of $50,000, the council awarded grants to three projects, each with the potential to make a significant impact on our community.

  1. The Cargo e-Bike Initiative
    • Applicant: Bike Hub Nelson Inc
    • Amount awarded: $8,970.56
  2. Low-emissions commuting
    • Applicant: Businesses for Climate Action/Mission Zero
    • Amount awarded: $20,000
  3. Advertising public transport on the back of the e-buses
    • Applicant: Nelson Transport Strategy Group, Nelsust Inc
    • Amount awarded: $21,000
