Nelson City Council adopted an Earthquake-prone, Dangerous and Insanitary Buildings Policy in 2006, as required by section 131 of the Building Act 2004.
The policy was amended in 2017 to remove references to earthquake-prone buildings, and most recently reviewed in 2024. Following that review, Council adopted an amendment to the policy that took effect on 12 May 2025.
The Dangerous, Affected and Insanitary Buildings Policy 2025 outlines the approach and priorities Council will take in performing its functions in relation to dangerous, affected and insanitary buildings in its region, and how the policy will apply to heritage buildings.
