Marsden Cemetery
Nestled in the quiet surroundings of Marsden Valley behind Stoke, Marsden Valley Cemetery is a beautiful lawn cemetery and the main cemetery serving Nelson. It provides a peaceful, well‑maintained environment for honouring loved ones and supports a range of burial and memorial options for families.
What the Cemetery offers
Marsden Valley Cemetery accommodates a variety of interment and memorial needs, including:
- Burial Plots
- Natural burial plots
- Ash interment plots
- Plaque only memorials
- Children's area: A flowering cherry tree has been planted in an area set aside for people to leave toys and flowers in memory of their little ones. This keeps these items clear of the mown lawns.
- RSA section: reserved for service members, with plaques provided by Veterans’ Affairs. Spouses or partners may also be interred in this area.

About the Cemetery
Opened in 1956, Marsden Valley Cemetery combines established plantings—including redwoods over 90 years old—with the design of a modern lawn cemetery. Headstones and memorials in this cemetery must meet specific size and style guidelines to maintain the lawn‑park setting and ensure safe mowing access.
The cemetery is regularly maintained. Flowers or other items placed on graves may need to be moved from time to time to allow for mowing, particularly during peak maintenance periods such as Christmas—these times are advertised in advance.
Finding a Loved One's Plot
A touchscreen search kiosk is available near the main entrance of the Cemetery Office. By entering a name, visitors can view the corresponding plot location and area. A map brochure is provided beside the kiosk to help with locating graves.
