Natural Burial Areas

Natural burial areas are available at both Marsden Cemetery and Wakapuaka Cemetery. These areas are set aside for burials that follow environmentally sustainable practices and support the natural return of the body to the soil.

What is a natural burial?

A natural burial allows the body to decompose naturally within the active soil layer. To support this process:

The body must not be embalmed or treated with chemicals that slow natural breakdown.
Caskets, coffins, or shrouds must be fully biodegradable and free from substances that prevent decomposition.
Burials take place at a single, shallow depth within the active soil zone.

Plot allocation

Natural burial plots are allocated in sequence.
While the right to burial may be purchased, specific plots cannot be pre-allocated.

Ashes in natural burial areas

Subject to gaining Council authority via a Warrant of Interment and permission from the holder of the Exclusive Right of Burial, ashes of other people may be placed in the burial plot.
Ashes also need to be in a biodegradable container and must be confined within the boundary of the plot.

Markers and memorials

To maintain the natural environment:

One untreated wooden marker is allowed per plot. The marker shall be no larger than 150mm X 100mm in size x 250mm high above ground level. The marker shall be attached to an untreated timber stem a maximum size 100mm x 100mm that can be pushed into the soil and is to be centrally located at the head of the plot.
Everything placed on graves in natural burial areas must be biodegradable.

Planting and restoration

Each burial plot is planted with native plants by Council between May and August.
Families may attend or assist with planting if they wish.
Families may also provide a native tree from the Council’s approved trees list.
Council maintains the area and replaces vegetation when needed.

Funeral arrangements

Families arranging their own service must supply their own lowering gear and equipment, as Council does not provide green mats or lowering devices for natural burials.
The Sexton prepares the plot and fills it after the service; families may help with filling but cannot assist with digging due to Health & Safety regulations.
