Gambling Venue Policy 2018

The Nelson City Council Gambling Policy regulates the number and location of Class 4 gaming machines ('pokies') and Totalisator Agency Board ('TAB') venues within the Nelson district.

The Gambling Act 2003 and the Racing Act 2003 both require the Council to review its Policy every three years. The last review was in November 2018 and Council considered feedback from 50 public submissions on proposed changes. Council adopted the revised Policy in December 2018.

The objective of Council’s Gambling Policy is to minimise harm caused by gambling in the Nelson district. In line with this objective, Council adopted the following changes to the 2016 Policy:

  • The cap on the number of electronic gaming machines allowed to operate in the district was reduced to 162
  • A new limit on the number of electronic gaming machines allowed at new venues. The new limit of five machines, previously nine.
  • Provision that new venues cannot be located in high deprivation areas
