The photo of Susan Dalton on display at Nelson Hospital shows a rather formidable character of 18 stone. Her obituary says she was a nurse in Cambridgshire when the Nelson Provincial Government secured her services for Nelson. Her salary was £60 year and board and lodgings for at least two years. She was matron for 25 years and was only 57 when she died of gangrene of her foot.
